Papier mache masks were first made in Venice in the 12th century.

Venetian craftsmen created each one by hand from layers of finely cut and carefully glued paper which they had set into a plaster cast to form the facial outline of the mask.

When the papier mache set, the craftsman would begin the hand painting. Layer after layer of paint was applied to achieve the desired effect to create the character the wearer would assume.
